| The Winchester was built in 1924 and opened as The Winchester in December of 2002. Previously it was Jacobs Lanes, Martens Lanes, Madars Lanes, Duffers and Tyr.
There have been numerous local shows at The Winchester. Jimmy O was the first to play the club. Alex Bevan was the first larger local act, followed closely by Jonah Koslen (from The Michael Stanley Band/Breathless). Anne E. DeChant, Brian Henke, Mr. Downchild, Charley Brown, Rosevelt, Breathless, Waterband, Sky Dogs, Tie Dye Harvest, The Wake Up and a host of local talent have played The Winchester, and continue to make return engagements.
The First National act to play was...
Leon Russell - January 24th, 2003. The show was a sell out at $20.00 per ticket. Leon had a five piece band with him that included his daughter on backing vocals. Famous as a writer and keyboardist. Has written hits done by Ray Charles, George Benson, B.B. King and his own huge hits like "Tight Rope." A terrific success, especially considering we had never used the back room before! Opener was Cats on Holiday.
Ashley Cleveland - March 15th, 2003. Two time Grammy Award Winner for the "Best Gospel Rock Album." Tickets were $15.00 and Ashley performed solo.
We then experienced a long layoff of National Acts for various reasons. They resumed with...
Leon Russell - October 11th, 2003. Another sell out. This time Leon brought a seven piece band. His people said how much they enjoyed the room and the crowd the first time so they wanted to come back! They've got an open invitation. Tickets were $32.00. Opener was J.Blues.
Style of Five - November 12th, 2003. An actual Russian Folk Band just off the plane from the USSR that actually leaned towards classical music. Tremendous musicians and a suprise large crowd made the event a sell out at $15.00 per ticket. A nice review in the Plain Dealer followed the show.
Al Stewart - November 14th, 2003. A sell out. Tickets were $22.00. Al performed solo. The set included "Year of the Cat," "Soho," and "On the Border," but no "Time Passages." Opening was Justin Gerski on keyboards.
John Ford Coley - November 15th, 2003. Tickets were $15.00. John Ford is half of the successfull '70's duo England Dan & John Ford Coley. Hits included "I'd Really Love To See You Tonight," "It's Sad When You Belong to Someone Else, When The Right One Comes Along," "Nights Are Forever Without You." etc. John Ford hadn't been to Cleveland in 20 years and played the intimate crowd a set list of tunes he said he had rarely played. He even did a request to play "I'd Really Love To See You Tonight" again! Opener was Denis from Cats on Holiday.
Ember Swift - November 22nd, 2003. A three piece Canadian band. Ember was voted "Best Vocalist in Toronto" by the readers of NOW Magazine. The show was very well received by the large, enthusiastic crowd. This was a FREE show.
Bill Haley's Comets - November 28th, 2003. About 70 people showed up for the Comets, led by the "Walking Bass Player" Al Rappa. Tickets were $16.50 or only $10.00 if you showed your Rock and Roll Hall of Fame membership card. This was the first time there was swing dancing at The Winchester and there was a lot of it! The first snowstorm of the year did not dampen people's spirits. Set included "See You Later Alligator," "Rock Around The Clock" and a couple curious cover tunes. Bob Segers "Old Time Rock & Roll" ?!?
The Strawbs - December 12th, 2003. The most enthusiastic crowd we've ever had!! The sell out crowd lept to their feet in standing ovations again and again. It was the first time the Strawbs had played Cleveland in 25 years and we are working to get them back. This was an all acoustic show featuring Dave Cousin, Dave Lambert and Brian Willoughby (who showed up the night before and jammed during Musicians Night! Too cool). Read the show review on the Strawbs website . Dave Cousins said from the stage "this is a magiacal place to play." Tickets were $18.00.
Steve Forbert - February 13th, 2004. Steve was touring in support of his Grammy Nominated album "Any Old Time" which the previous Saturday sadly lost the Grammy for best traditional folk album. Steve performed solo and did a wide selection of tunes spanning his long career. He requested of the sound man to keep the sound low to increase the intamacy of the show and it worked. The large crowd was hanging on each song with barely a noise other than Steve's voice, guitar, harmonica and percussive "board" that was mic - ed on the floor. Local Americana artist Robert Cornerlius opened the show. Tickets were $12.50.
Colin Hay From Men at Work - February 20th, 2004. Colin was just on tour with Ringo Starr as part of the All Starr Band and got such a good response he put together his own solo tour with promotion assistance from VH1. This show was scary. Colin had not yet arrived at the Winchester and the opening act was already long done, the crowd was large and waiting patiently. NO answer on the cell phone # I had and I started contemplating refunds for the entire building with a queasy stomach. Just then, around 9:50pm, Colin walked in, passed through the crowd and in 6-7 minutes time was on stage and proceeded to put on a superior show which drew standing ovations from the Sold Out crowd. He did a great job. Tickets were $16.50, the opener was Connor O'Brien.
Breathless - February 27th, 2004. Legendary Cleveland band Breathless played their first show back since their renunion at the Odeon in Dec, 2003. Jonah Koslen gave details of songs he wrote for Breathless and the Michael Stanley Band and was asked questions by WDOK promotions man Rick Major who MC'ed the evening. The Breathless CD Live at the Winchester will be available at www.jonahkoslen.com or at the Winchester soon. Tickets were $10.00. Percy has been called the best bassist on the planet by Bass Player Magazine. Lance has drummed with Cassandra Wilson and Joan Osborn amoung many others, and Marc simply blew the crowd away. They are the remains of BRAND X which was Phil Collins from Genesis side project. A tremendous amount of talent on one stage. Tickets were just $12.00!!! Were you there or in front of the T.V.? (Percy said "The Winchester was the best place he has played in Cleveland" and that I could quote him).
Leon Russell - April 23rd, 2004. Leon's 3rd time back. Probably the best, most energetic show of his three, though the smallest crowd of the three shows. I may have brought him back in a bit too close to his last show. People were boogying throughout the hall! Tickets were $32.00.
Pat Travers - May 7th, 2004. Famous for the classic rock radio staples "Boom, Boom, Out Go the Lights," and "Snortin' Whiskey and Drinkin' Cocaine." Tickets were $8.00 for this sell out show.

Opening the show was long time Cleveland band Intra.
Michael Stanley - June 26th, 2004. Michael took part in one of our monthly "Round at the Winchester" song writers circles. He did solo acoustic versions of many of his new songs including "Romeo is Bleeding," "Last Day On Earth," and "It Takes a Train," and threw in a haunting "My Town" and "Rosewood Bitters" for good measure. It was nice to see some of the Belkin people at the show. Cool.

Ambrosia - August 9th, 2004. Ambrosia featured three of the original four (no David Pack) members and rounded out the sound with a six piece group which included Robert Barry on guitar who was in the band Power of Three with Kieth Emerson (of Emerson, Lake, and Palmer). Ambrosia played a hot set that rocked more than people probably expected, but still included the hits like "You're the Only Woman," "The Biggest Part of Me," and the encore which was "Magical Mystery Tour" and "How Much I Feel." Molly Hatchet - August 30th, 2004. Molly Hatchet are the Southern Boogie Hard Rockers best known for their hit Flirtin' With Disaster. Tickets were $25.00 and the show was sadly under attended. It was some kick @ss rock and roll however. You should have been there. Jimmy O opened the show.

He did do a Burrito song as well as the Eagles "Hollywood Waltz" but no "Witchy Woman" which was a crowd request all night. Tickets were $15.00. The show was reviewed in the Free Times.
Esma Redzepova - October 22nd & 23rd, 2004. Esma is the Queen of the Romani Gypsy music, she is Internationally loved and this was the first time we ever did two nights from the same artist. The Pete Best Band - October 26th, 2004. Pete Best was the original drummer for the Beatles from 1960 to 1962 before they hired Ringo Starr. Dr. Hook - November 17th, 2004. After TWO postponements the show finally happened. The crowd was less than half of what we had already sold presale tickets for, but the people that were there got a treat. They played all the hits including "When Youre In Love With A Beautiful Woman," "Sexy Eyes," "Only Sixteen," "Sharing the Night Together," the rollicking final song "Cover of the Rolling Stone," and the encore, in which I noticed some women crying on each other's shoulders... "Sylvia's Mother." The good Doctor assured me that the postponements were due to the booking agent and not the band, and he was very gracious. Joe's Garage opened the show. $25.00.
Michael Glabicki (from Rusted Root) - Jeffrey Gaines - Double Bill. December 17th, 2004. Michael is the leader of Rusted Root and has recently been touring solo. Jeffrey Gaines has a National hit to his name, "In Your Eyes" and has toured with Tom Petty, Stevie Nicks, etc. Tickets were $20.00.

Larry Burnett (From Firefall) - March 11th, 2005 Larry was one of the main singer/songwriter/guitarists in the 70's hit machine Firefall. Larry performed solo and played lots of solo material and not that much of the Firefall catalog. I asked him to play "Strange Way" in sound check which he did. He did play "You are the Woman," "Just Remember I Love You" and "Cinderalla," so everything was O.k. The Melvin Sparks Band - April 16th, 2005. Melvin has played guitar on 100's of jazz and blues albums for Blue Note and Prestige Records but had a decidedly funky sound tonight. He told MANY stories of the old days and led the crowd in the Fish Cheer and asked "1,2,3, What Are We Fighting For?" Interestingly the crowd was way less Hippie than I was expecting. Before the show in the music hall Country Joe was interviewed and filmed by an independant film maker for 45 minutes for a movie that we'll hopefully see released sometime in the near future. Two sets, no opener, jaws dropped. $12.50.
Chris Duarte Group - January 23rd, 2006. I just saw things I've NEVER seen a guitarist do. The blues have been left in the wake of a mind blowing combination of guitar pyrotechnics and tasty chops. The poor bass player was on his forth gig with Chris and still auditioning. He crossed himself before the last song and held on for dear life. Wow. And he played for three hours! The large enthusiastic crowd ate it up. Dead Guy Blues opened. $10.00.

Tinsley Ellis - April 3rd, 2006. Tinsley is currently on Alligator Records after jumping from Telarc. He is a firey blues master guitarist. The smaller than expected crowd was wowed. The NCAA final game didn't help us on tough Monday night, but a brilliant show. $10.00.
Shawn Mullins - April 8th, 2006. Grammy nominated singer/songwriter best known for his national hit "Lulluby (Rockaby)." He is again receiving national airplay for "Beautiful Wreck" which is all over Satellight radio right now. The solo show was a force of intimacey and people actually were crying during his rendition of "House of the Rising Sun" which as Shawn explained, was written int he late 1800's by a female prostitute. It's a whole new song with that information. Jerry Popiel opened. $15.00.
